Websites are designed on a Mac computer and fine-tuned on a Windows PC. This vigorous development cycle ensures the website will perform well across multiple browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari) and platform (e.g. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX etc) combinations. All websites are designed to be easily accessible and compliant with the latest World Wide Web Consortium’s web standards and guidelines.

What are “Web Standards”?

Admittedly, it’s very difficult to get excited about this subject unless you are a web designer, but when I design a webpage to web standards, it means that each web page will:

consist of valid XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language).
Valid code, whilst sounding a bit “techie”, is important. Just as a natural language has its rules of grammar and punctuation, so too does the language used to make web pages.
use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to control the look of the page
If your site has 200 pages, for example, the look (colours, font, layout, images etc) can be controlled by one single document. This has a far reaching effect: for example, if you wanted to change the colour of all the text in all 200 pages of your website, CSS would effect the change by allowing you to edit just one line of code in one document! The old and incorrect method (still widely used by many “professional” web designers today) might mean the manual editing of thousands of bits of code in hundreds of pages.
be properly structured and semantically coded
Correctly structured and coded HTML is not only essential for search engine ranking but also for accessibility. A correctly coded website will also mean that it will be compatible with future browsers when they are released.
work in any web browser
This requires an in depth working knowledge of the subtle differences between web browsers.

Designing a website using web standards would provide the following advantages:

  • The website would have less code, thereby reducing file size. This means quicker page loading times and less bandwidth usage
  • The website would comply with accessibility laws and guidelines without sacrificing performance or sophistication
  • The website would be search engine friendly
  • The website would be viewable in multiple browsers and platforms
  • The website would be supported by non-traditional browsers including PDA and smartphones
  • The website would work correctly in future browsers as well as current and old browsers
